President

As President, I will work relentlessly to better our school. To amp up spirit, I plan to host pep rallies, hyped home games, timely sweater sales, spirit competitions, and a new house-colour system to break down barriers within the student body. Club fairs, stronger social media presence, and in-class visits will improve communication. To achieve a more transparent SAC, I plan to implement Ask-SAC, open and livestream meetings, and Reckoner-SAC liaisons. I’ve got bright ideas for a lit year.

I’ve got bright ideas – vote Lisa for a lit year!

As President, I will work relentlessly to better our school. My platform is founded on 3 main pillars: spirit, communication, and transparency.

1. SPIRIT

  • Turnt pep rallies
  • Hyped home games
  • Spirit competitions with a NEW house-color system: students in all programs split into colour-houses to compete + participate in spirit events (Kahoot, pep rallies/spirit weeks) and interact more, to break down barriers
  • Earlier sweater sales

2. COMMUNICATION

  • Club fairs each semester; students can more easily get involved
  • Stronger social media presence
  • In-class visits will help make EVERYONE aware of upcoming events, including those without social media
  • Your voice matters. Continue the SAC Ambassadors program with diverse representatives  for the entire student body (all programs and grades)
  • Unhealthy food sale days with min. 2 weeks notice

3. TRANSPARENCY

  • Ask-SAC: members of SAC in the SAC office every lunch to answer questions
  • Open & livestream meetings: stimulate input and discussion amongst the student body
  • All meeting minutes and thorough budget reports will be shared online
  • Reckoner-SAC liaisons will be established for clear and effective communication

Let’s make our mark on Marc Garneau. VOTE LISA FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Let’s make our mark on Marc Garneau. VOTE LISA FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Vice President

John Le’s currently the grade 11 Representative. Besides being MGCI’s mascot, John wants to ensure that all groups within Garneau are united. He believes there isn’t TOPS, BSAP, ESL, mainstream, etc… there is only Marc Garneau. He plans to do this by fixing SAC Ambassadors to be more inclusive and efficient, organizing more SAC Open Meeting, creating an Arts Convener to represent all arts-related clubs, revising the constitution, reconnecting with TDSB SuperCouncil and working closely with The Reckoner.

Full Platform

  • Allow a period of 1 month
  • Elect Grade Representative in October
  • Have at least one SAC open meeting every month
  • Revise the constitution
  • Clear outlines on SAC’s functions

  • To be a liaison between Music Council, Art Council and all arts-related activities/clubs in Marc Garneau
  • Reconnect Marc Garneau with TDSB Super Council
  • Increase Marc Garneau’s voice in TDSBWork with Communication Coordinator and Guidance to provide volunteering opportunities to students of Marc Garneau

My name is Ali Khan and I am running for your future Vice President. I am currently the Athletic Convener and I’d like to represent the student body as Vice President because I have the most experience in SAC out of any other candidates running for Vice President. That being said, I know what the students of Marc Garneau want and I would like to represent them for the upcoming school year. So remember to vote for KHAN as Vice President. Thank you.

Full Platform
  • Successfully plan out and execute a welcome back rally for the students of Marc Garneau in the first week back from summer vacations. This will let the student body know that their new Vice President is concerned for their well-being, and is an active member of the student council. The main point of the rally would be to give the greater student body the realization that we are stronger united than separated. As I have personally experienced that there are various groups in the school who don’t feel that they belong with MGCI.

  • My main job would be to overlook the new student council with my expertise and previous knowledge on SAC. I would attend every weekly meeting and make sure that the meets are efficient and co-chaired in a proper manner.

  • I would also like to start promoting the SAC ambassadors and Grade rep positions no later than the end of the first month of school, and would like to elect the new members of SAC by the end of the second month back from summer break. The quicker we get the full SAC team together, the more we can progress as a team throughout the year.

  • My job would also require me to be a leader, and with my current position as the Athletic Convenor, I believe that I can certainly be the leader that Marc Garneau would want and need to have a successful academic and fun year. In fact I have recently been awarded with the Chris Penny leader ship award for my work done in the school as the Athletic Convenor.

  • I would like to have create another event in terms with a dance and a proper function, near the end of the year to let all the students come as one, and enjoy their last days before the summer break begins. I think this would be a great way to end off the year. This event would be projected mainly for the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, as the seniors would be busy with prom, but would still be invited to participate, as one of their last functions of their high school career.

  • My job would also need me to fill in for the President in case of his/her absence, which wouldn’t be a problem for me as I have a tremendous amount of leadership skills.

  • My personality is similar to my upbringing, in that I am diverse, hard-working, and determined. This allows me to approach issues from another perspective, and enables me to look at issues outside the box.

Treasurer

As a treasurer, I will work hard and put all my efforts to ensure that the student council runs smoothly and effectively by maintaining an accurate and detailed record of the council’s finances. I will fairly allocate the money to all the clubs and committees so they have an ample amount to keep running and will provide them with the funding as soon as possible. I will hold Treasury Council meetings at least once each semester to coordinate with the clubs’ presidents and treasurers. I will present a financial report at each meeting to keep the members updated with the financial position of the council. I will give monetary advices and bring great ideas to the council such as lowering prom ticket prices.

If am elected to SAC as a treasurer I will make many positively effective decisions towards the school budget. I would first off start by managing the money for every project or event of SAC in a way which would help keep us in our budget guidelines. As we all know if the budget is not managed properly it is difficult to plan new events because one may have already spent it on the previous event. One main thing I would focus on is communicating my ideas to the rest of the council members in an effective way so that the role of the treasurer is never undermined. To uphold this position, I intend to devote all the time needed into after school SAC meetings and events, and to act as a responsible and intelligent treasurer. One of the main changes I would make is to ensure that all of the school’s budget is being spent on reasonable activities, and smart choices are being made with the money. I really look forward to working as treasurer with SAC.

I’m Laksikaa and I am running for Marc Garneau’s 2017-2018 spirit convenor! Along with pep rallies, spirit week, fun fairs and a sports week! With that being said I hope to not only uplift Garneau’s school spirit but to create an inclusive experience for everyone to enjoy!

I’ll be introducing pep rallies to Garneau as well as new days – such as meme day, character day, etc. – and new traditions – Iftar parties, end of the year carnivals, challenge competitions, etc. Lastly, I’ll make Christmas show a show that no one would want to miss. A whole new level of spirit is expected to reach Garneau.

Muqadas Assad

Hi my name is Muqadas Assad and I am running for social convenor I believe that if I withhold this position I have the ability and skill to make all of our events LIT! I naturally love planning events and parties and have held in the past a 80+ person party where some of us came together and enjoyed our time. I hope to bring the same passion and apply it on a larger scale, our school and make our school experience as memorable as can be.

  • Make a post in the MGCI SAC Instagram/Facebook page asking students what songs they would like to hear 2-3 days before the dances

  • Have a suggestion box in the cafeteria where students can suggest songs (Those who don’t have Instagram/Facebook)

  • Let students come up with what theme they want for their Semi-Formal

    • The theme with the most votes will be made the 2017-18 Semi theme

  • Lower ticket prices by having several fundraisers

Special Events Convenor

I’m running for Special Events Convenor. My objective is to keep MGCI’S multiculturalism alive and make next years’ international show be the most memorable of all. I have a special talent for creative design which means all the events I would plan would benefit from having my keen eye for detail. Unique ideas will create unique events. Everyone’s ideas will be welcomed.  If I get elected MGCI will take a vast leap into being more lit, fun, and memorable.

Secretary

Communications Coordinator

I love to meet new people and learn new things. From my experience in SAC this year, I have learned that I can do just that while helping the student body and the school itself to continue achieving great things. My goal is to ensure that student council and the student body work together and SAC maintains a sense of transparency with the students. With your support, I will ensure that everyone knows exactly what’s going on in Garneau!

Huda is an artistic girl who is only willing to get off the computer to obsess over nature. She is dedicated to bridge the gap between SAC and students by increasing awareness of activities through regular announcements, catchy posters, and weekly updates for future events on social media. She would like to create a yearbook committee and make them (yearbooks) affordable through a payment-plan and discount contests. Going in her fourth year, she hopes to increase student participation in events.

Clubs Convenor

Grad Convenor

HARINI WIJEYAKUMAR is running to be your next CLUBS CONVENOR; she is your ordinary teenager with an extraordinary dream of making 2017/2018 a year worthwhile. Some things she will do her best to incorporate next year as part of her platform are the following:

  • Send emails to keep clubs updated on events, discussions and meetings

  • Hold regular meetings with club executives

Hey guys! My name is Subaani Mathy and I’m running to be your 2017/2018 grad convenor! My job as grad convenor is to organize and promote prom. Doing little things like fundraising all year long to increase our school budget, plan ahead, get a better venue, and do a theme that all of YOU would like is what I’m running for. In my prom committee, I will put in 110% to get the TOPS, BSAP, SCHISM and the regular program to work together and help me make prom the best night of your life! So vote for me Garneau, let me be the best choice you’ll ever make!

Athletic Convenor

External Affairs Officer

Hi. My name is Kashaf Amir and I am running for the position of Athletic Convenor. I’m in grade 11 and have been part of the athletic association for the past year. A little about my platform is that I plan to bring back popular sports to play during intramurals. I also plan on organizing a new and different athletic banquet and getting more girls to get involved in intramurals. There will be more rallies and fun activities to take part in! Vote Kashaf as your 2017-2018 Athletic Convenor.

Areez Khaki

My name is Areez Khaki, I’m a grade 10 student whose ambition is to serve as Garneau’s External Affairs Officer for the upcoming academic year.  My statement & goals are crystal clear, to make MGCI apparel more affordable and to provide more options to the student body to purchase a memento of their high school experience.  Secondly, I will make it my top priority to attend all supercouncil meetings, it doesn’t stop there I will take it a step further by making sure that MGCI”s input is given and that we establish a clear line of communication with the rest of the TDSB, so that the playing field is equal between all schools.  Thirdly, I will construct an External Affairs committee whose primary objective will be to work with myself and the rest of SAC, to deliver the best experience for the students of Garneau.
