The Reckoner is the award-winning student newspaper of Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. During the school year, The Reckoner publishes regularly on its website and produces a monthly printed newspaper which is distributed to the school community.

The organization is comprised entirely of dedicated student volunteers: some of the best writers, artists, photographers, designers, and developers of the school. In 2014, the organization was named Ontario’s Best High School Electronic Newspaper and Ontario’s Best High School Volunteer Newspaper by the Toronto Star.

Cindy Zeng is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Life Manager at The Reckoner. Quick! Snapshots of her personality in less than 100 words: her favourite colour is orange; she has a penchant for punnery; fashion is a concept she does not understand; she enjoys dark humour; she does not enjoy sleep deprivation; she’s a cuber, a food fanatic, and a book lover. She’s often found laughing really hard at her own jokes. (If you ask her nicely, she’ll tell you one.)

News Manager

Deifilia To is the News Manager for The Reckoner. Her life can be described rather simply: school, clubs, eat, and repeat. (Please note: Sleep is omitted for a reason.) Though she lives a hectic lifestyle, she enjoys doing monotonously repetitive activities such as multiplying by two, collecting transfers on the subway, and throwing a piece of plastic back and forth for hours (otherwise known as ultimate). They’re a great way for her to pretend to be productive.

A busy bee is a happy bee. At least, that’s Parnika’s motto--she enjoys doing a lot of things so her schedule’s always packed. She has no clue what she wants to do in life, but for now, she’s content with being the Editorial Manager for The Reckoner. Her other interests include listening to music, reminiscing in old Disney movies, travelling, and reading. When she isn't polishing her Air Cadet boots, or frantically scribbling down tasks on her ever-expanding to-do list, she can be found sitting by her bedroom window, hoping Peter Pan will fly her away to Neverland.

Arani Kulamurugan

Arani Kulamurugan is a writer at The Reckoner, and is a grade 10 student at MGCI. She can be seen either singing, listening to insanely loud rap music, memorizing Shakespeare insults, frantically studying for a test, or just chilling with her friends in the hall. She may look like a shy person, but she's actually really crazy once you get to know her and is often heard before seen. Many tend to call her "keener" or "tryhard", but that's a lie. She enjoys writing, and hopes to go into neuroscience one day.

Areeba Asghar

Areeba Asghar is a life and editorial writer at The Reckoner. Amongst endless hours of complaining about nonexistent homework and drinking inhumane amounts of apple juice, Areeba gathers enough time to write a line or two. These, often incomplete, sentences are (over the course of endless juice drinking sessions) concocted into a mosaic of words, every letter falling into place. She gets an inexplicable sort of satisfaction when her mind is imagining these words and her hands painting them on parchment. A rather poetic person, Areeba is quite passionate about writing and is a true supporter of sad endings. In her opinion, the happily ever after days are long gone.

Ayman Kazi

Ayman Arik Kazi is a writer for the Reckoner and a Grade 10 students at Marc Garneau. To him, the world and its people is a source of inspiration. He loves writing about concepts that are obscure yet integral (not to mention extremely controversial). His pieces are often hard to swallow since they bring to light things that people know as the truth but feel too uncomfortable to talk about. At first sight, he seems abrasive and quick to judge. However, those who know him well know that he always means well.

Caryn Qian is a member of Print Development at The Reckoner. When she isn’t procrastinating on homework, she enjoys daydreaming, reading, and sketching elaborate fonts for her essay titles (only to erase them later, realizing that most teachers probably won’t appreciate them). Caryn is quite the average person; she tends to blend in with the crowd as she is generally quiet. If you ever do pass her in the hallways, she might greet you with a friendly “hi”. Be sure to say hi back, she’ll really appreciate it.

Lauren attended a workshop and got to use a power drill on an assortment of foam bones, and is now the proud owner of an assortment of foam femur, humerus and radius bones. Lauren has never cried at school. Chiung-Ting (Ryan) Lin

Ryan Lin is a News Board writer for The Reckoner. For him, the only thing better than reporting on new things is actually doing them. Because of this, he is much like an electron in that, at any given moment in time, you might find him: hustling around a baseball diamond, freezing on curling ice, pretending to play the violin, silently cursing his CAD software, falling asleep with a textbook open, falling asleep in general, reading Supreme Court cases, or looking for even more activities to start but never finish. Maybe all of these things. Maybe none.

Hannah Lee is a writer for the Life board at the Reckoner. Other than writing, she loves dancing, swimming, reading, and watching sunsets. She plays the clarinet, the guitar, the piano, the drums, and the violin, and she is "painfully, brutally honest," according to some of her friends; the only time she ever lies is when the fate of the world is at stake, or if she is writing fiction. Russell Ijaya

Russell Ijaya is a grade nine writer for the news board at The Reckoner. Asides from endorsing himself in studies, or at least trying to, he has an avid interest in music, playing and listening. One of his many time-consuming hobbies is listening to renditions of the same song, listening to both major and minor twists artists include. He was formally taught piano and he’s a self-taught guitarist. While he’s not occupying himself with his musical hobbies, he’s a keen reader of a variety of articles on the internet, from tech reviews to inspirational stories.

He enjoys a wide variety of things, including but not limited to:  the visual arts and programming (neither of which he is competent at), procrastinating, wasting time on the Internet, wasting time in general (all things he is competent at). He aspires to be many things, but fails at most of his endeavors. He realizes that his biography has no flow to it. In all fairness, neither does life.

Victor Yu

Victor Yu is a writer at The Reckoner. With the personality of a cat, he worships afternoon naps, is often too curious for his own good, and enjoys looking at himself in the mirror. Though he is usually cheerful and bubbly in character, he is often sarcastic and pessimistic to those around him. He spends quite a deal of time staring off into space; whether he is deep in thought daydreaming or just sleepy, nobody knows. Occasionally at school you may catch him blabbering incoherent gibberish with his friends in a delirious manner. Don't worry, he’s not crazy.
