8 MGCI students attended the annual Eastern Canada District of Key Club International (DCON) Convention held from 27 March to 29 March. The students stayed at the Delta Hotel in Toronto, the host city, over the course of 3 days. Marc Garneau CI was the host club for the convention.

Nearly 300 Key Clubbers from all over Eastern Canada, from the Maritimes to Ottawa, attended the event. At DCON, members attended workshops, elected the incoming district board, and were given the opportunity to tour the city, among many other activities.

Ahsan Zahid, a Grade 12 student at Garneau said “I met a lot of new people from all over Eastern Canada,” Zahid commented. “I also learned many new things to help improve Key Club and my community.”

Two MGCI students, Mona Adib and Sophia Song, were elected to be on the district board of 2015-2016. Adib was re-elected for the Governor position, and Song was elected to be a Lieutenant Governor prior to the convention.

“I think the most important thing I learned from DCON is the importance of camaraderie.” Adib remarked. “It’s really incredible to think that because of Key Club, I’ve built strong relationships with people in other provinces and other countries.”

Clubs from all over Eastern Canada competed for a number of awards.

Garneau won four awards. They are as follows:

1st Place – Essay Writing Contest

1st Place – Oratorical Contest

2nd Place – Digital Poster Contest

3rd Place – Traditional Poster Contest

Having raised over $5000, MGCI was awarded 2nd place for the highest amount of funds raised to support the ELIMINATE Project.
