On the evening of 14 November, over 300 students and guests attended MGCI’s annual semi-formal dance at Ellas Banquet Halls for an evening of food, dancing, and fun. Tickets were sold out as of the Monday before and the night was eagerly anticipated. Social Convenor Tracey Frimpong organized the event along with Faria Abedin, Derya Kurt, Barkhaa Talat, Laxica Satkunalingam, and a semi-formal committee.
This year’s event followed a “Hollywood Glamorous” theme, completed with a red carpet and a sit-down dinner. Students were served three dishes at their tables. Many students complained of the waiting times between courses as it limited the length of the dancing afterwards. Throughout the meal, music had to be stopped as students were told repeatedly to return to their seats to eat.
DJ Lissa Monet and MC Ebone hosted the night with song requests previously made by students online and twitter requests during the night. Some felt that the music did not suit everyone’s taste. “The DJ was good, but she just didn’t play songs that us Garneau kids would like,” commented Zainab Kanuga, echoed by other students.
The evening also included the distribution of four prizes for the Best Dressed Male and Female, Best Couple, and Best Party Animal, chosen by the semi-formal committee.
Overall, the event was a success as everyone enjoyed themselves. Tracey commented: “I thought that the event went well. It didn’t go exactly as planned with the slow service of food, but at the end of the day, the event pulled through and it was a blast. I couldn’t have done any of this without the amazing MGCI social committee and the student body’s support.”
Student Council is planning for several more dances this school year including the annual Athletic Banquet and a Spring Fling.
