Yang Chen and Teodora Blidaru accept an award for participation

On Friday, Marc Garneau’s show choir participated in the preliminaries of the second annual Show Choir Canada National Competition at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Unfortunately, we did not make it into the finals. Despite this, Yang Chen, the President and choreographer of our “Adrenaline!” Show Choir, remains optimistic. “Even though we didn’t place, we knew we had put on our best, and it was the long journey we had together that counts,” he said. “We thoroughly enjoyed the other show choir performances (holy cow!) and clapped and cheered for them as if they were our own.”

The schools who advanced to the finals on Saturday included last year’s winner Wexford Collegiate, last year’s runner up Etobicoke School of the Arts, Unionville High School and York Mills Collegiate. This year, Etobicoke School of the Arts beat out Wexford to become Canada’s champion. Unionville placed fourth and York Mills placed sixth.

Saturday had more than just the finals to offer. Students were also able to attend workshops about singing Gospel music, acting and learning to be the “one to watch” on stage. Two national level American show choirs from Burbank, California also performed. Garneau students likely learned a lot from these experiences and from watching better show choirs. Our Show Choir will continue to strive for success in the future.
