She was my best friend when we were kids,
She was the most carefree girl I’ve ever met.
But every daring girl has that tenderness,
the torment that betrays her when she cries,
and I was glad I was there for them,
to let the tears expose her a little,
so she would be a little less scared the next time.

Maybe only two years have gone by,
during which she grew up, and I didn’t.
But I saw that photo the other night,
and she looked stunning in that faded red satin dress,
being someone’s girlfriend,
being the champion of her life.
