Germany’s Oktoberfest expected to draw 6 million visitors.
The 182nd annual 16-day festival in Munich is a gathering for visitors to enjoy life’s simple pleasures: beer, and sausages. The mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, opened the festival with two blows of his mallet on the first keg. Germans and tourists alike will be celebrating until 4 October.

Japan law now allows troops to fight abroad.

Since World War II, Japan’s troops have not been allowed to fight on foreign soil. The bill was passed despite fierce resistance from the opposing parties to block the movement.

Highly resistant STI outbreak beginning in England.
A strain of gonorrhoea is not affected by the main treatments typically used against it. Sixteen cases have been diagnosed as of 18 September. Officials are worried that there may be more undiagnosed cases, putting the disease on national alert.

Croatia says it can no longer accept more immigrants.
After Hungary has blocked the math path between Serbia and itself with a metal fence and police, migrants have been streaming into Croatia. Due to limited resources, Croatia has offered food, water, and medical help to migrants, but cannot accommodate them for extended periods of time. They have appealed to the EU to find a policy to receive the immigrants.
